Abstract

The fine structure of the smooth muscle in the hypobranchial gland of the prosobranch gastropod mollusc, Buccinum undatum, is described. The muscle cells contain thin and thick filaments which do not appear to be arranged into myofibril units. The thin filaments, 90-110 Å diameter appear tubular in transverse section and tend to pack in partial orbits around the thick filaments. The thick filaments have diameters in the range 150-1200 Å have a faint 170 Å axial periodicity, and form cross-bridges with the thin filaments. The “dense body” and attachment plaque system is poorly developed. The muscle ultrastructure is compared with other molluscan and vertebrate smooth muscles.
