Abstract

Histochemical, pharmacological, and physical methods have revealed a number of differences between the dorsal and lateral lobes of the rat prostate. The morphology of these two lobes by light microscopy has revealed no significant difference between them. Ultrastructural studies, however, have revealed that the lateral lobe epithelium is characterized by (1) numerous microvilli, (2) dense secretory granules in the Golgi complex, and (3) flattened cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum—features which are not found in the dorsal lobe.
