Abstract

The dermal papilla of the guinea pig hair follicle has been studied by electron microscopic, histological, and histochemical methods. The fibroblast has a well developed rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum and a very prominent Golgi apparatus. Bundles of filaments and deposits of glycogen are also occasionally seen. The epithelial cells of the hair follicle are separated from the dermal papilla by a specialized basement membrane which is composed of several dense layers. Each dense layer consists of fine fibrils embedded in an amorphous matrix. The dermal papilla has fenestrated capillaries surrounded by a specialized and multilayered basement membrane similar to that present at the epitheliodermal junction.
