Abstract
With the elevation of a new Japanese officer as presider over De Wijk, or "The Village" where the officer was living, the author and his family face sever, imposing hardships such as the confiscation of all bicycles, pianos, and pets. The author attempts to find work in De Wijk to support his family, where he learns of the gradual detaining of the residents of De Wijk. As his family's time comes, the author and his family take their places to be shipped away, with the chapter closing as the author desecrates a Japanese flag.
