Abstract

Molecular MicrobiologyVolume 97, Issue 3 p. i-i Front CoverFree Access The filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 imports either free Fe(III), shown here coordinated by 6 water molecules (structure provided by G. Galstyan and E-W. Knapp; J Comput Chem. 2015, 36:69–78), or the ferric-schizokinen complex (PDB entry 3TNY) which is produced when iron is limiting. The background is a light microscopic image of Anabaena filaments and the bottom right is based on an electron micrograph of a cross section of an Anabaena cell revealing its internal membrane system as well as three carboxysomes. (Images from M. Rudolf and E. Schleiff, structures prepared by O. Mirus). For details, see the article by Rudolf et al. on pp. 577–588 of this issue.
