Abstract

The Radiological Society of North America celebrated the seventy-fifth anniversary of Roentgen's discovery of “the rays” with its own Fifty-sixth Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting Nov. 29-Dec. 4, 1970. Interest was high from the start. The aisles of the exhibits were crowded from their opening at 10:00 a.m. Sunday until the guards called “Everybody out!” at the close of the week. In all, 7,478 persons were registered, a gain of 1,049 over the 1969 Meeting. To these registrants the Society through its various committees presented 200 fulllength papers and 59 Work-In-Progress communications, 87 refresher courses, 96 scientific exhibits, and 103 technical exhibits. There is space here to name only a few of the highlights of the meeting. The Sunday evening film interpretation session was once more well-attended, with all seating and standing room taken. The difficult diagnostic exercises were directed by Charles E. Shopfner, M.D., and his associates in detection were Byron G. Brogdon, M.D., N. Thorne Griscom, M.D., John A. Goree, M.D., Manuel Viamonte, Jr., M.D., James L. Quinn, III, M.D., and Anthony Lalli, M.D. Last year's informal round table for senior radiology residents was so successful in facilitating a dialogue between students and leading teachers and practitioners in the field that it was repeated. Attendance was limited to approximately 25 students for each course, and no person could attend more than a single session. This year's teachers were: Ernest H. Wood, M.D., Neuroradiology; Edward B. Singleton, M.D., Pediatric Radiology; Herbert L. Abrams, M.D., Angiography; Giulio J. D'Angio, M.D., Rx Tumors of Infants and Children; Alexander Gottschalk, M.D., Nuclear Medicine; Milton Elkin, M.D., Genitourinary Radiology. In commemoration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of Roentgen's discovery, the Society scheduled a special event on Monday afternoon on American Radiology, Then and Now, with Howard P. Doub, M.D., Editor Emeritus of Radiology, presiding, and Emanuel R. N. Grigg, M.D., acting as Moderator. Other participants included Malcolm A. Bagshaw, M.D., W. Edward Chamberlain, M.D., Benjamin Felson, M.D., Gwilym S. Lodwick, M.D., Russell H. Morgan, M.D., E. James Potchen, M.D., Eugene P. Pendergrass, M.D., Leo G. Rigler, M.D., and Manuel Viamonte, Jr., M.D. The New Horizons for Radiologists Lecture was presented by Harry V. Gelboin, Ph.D., from the National Cancer Institute at Bethesda, Md. His title was Carcinogenesis, the Environment, and Gene Action. The Annual Oration was given this year in honor of Charles M. Gray, M.D., the 1962 President of the Society. The Orator, introduced by our President, John R. Hodgson, M.D., was William B. Seaman, M.D., who spoke on Radiology of the Colon—New Perspectives, Old Problems. Another event, always of interest, was the awarding of the Gold Medal. This year it was given to Cesare Gianturco, M.D., of Urbana, Ill. Still another special event was the Tuesday evening reception for members and guests.
