AbstractAbstractDespite a cold wind and driving rain, the large hall of the New Sunday School at Haworth was filled almost to overflowing for the Fifty-Sixth Annual Public Meeting of the Brontë Society on the afternoon of May 6th, 1950. Members and their friends had travelled from all over the North of England for the occasion, and among the audience were forty French teachers, working in Yorkshire, who, under the auspices of the Department of French at the University of Leeds, were devoting the day to the Brontës. In the morning they had been met at Haworth by Dr. Phyllis Bentley, who gave them a short talk on the Brontës and their works, before they made a tour of the Parsonage Museum.
