Abstract
The author assesses the development of research on voluntary associations and nonprofit organizations in the twenty years since he founded the Association for Voluntary Action Scholars and the Journal of Voluntary Action Research, predecessors of the current Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action and the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. The discussion pays particular attention to the growth of research centers, the publication of seminal books reviewing the field, and the expansion of research money available to scholars.
