Abstract

After a description of the field measuring method by radioactive probes a mathematical formulation is established to grasp the field distortion by a potential gradient radiosonde. With some approximations it is possible to derive form factors which depend on the length of the upper and the lower collector rod. In order to get a form factor 1.00 one can choose certain values of lengths. — The absolute determination of the form factor was carried out by using an artificial field in a cage. We were able to show that the dimensions of the cage have to exceed certain minimum values; in our case we succeeded with the measures 5 m height, 3 m×3 m base. Some results of form factors of different sondes are given and the experiences of using other methods to determine these factors by twin ascents or by comparison with ground measurementes etc. are described.
