Abstract

A further small fragment of timber from the North Ferriby boat-site is described and interpreted as the detached top of a cleat from a boat. Radiocarbon dating evidence suggests that it is contemporary with Ferriby 4. The report includes commentary on the use of alder in boat building and the occurrence of integrally formed cleats as housing fur inserted transverse timbers or, in certain circumstances, for the attachment of cords or bindings.
