Abstract

A trial with a group of volunteer patients with mild or moderate hypertension was carried out in Eastern Finland in 1983–1984. The aim was to compare the effects of low dose captopril combined with either a moderate salt restriction diet or with a regular diet. The study design made it possible to test whether a nurse who was given special instructions could run such a counseling for salt reduction. The experiences concerning feasibility and effects of this dietary counselling given by the nurse were encouraging. During 1 year men reduced their daily salt intake by approximately 30% and women by approximately 40%. The study stresses the importance of dietary advice in the treatment of hypertension, which can be given not only by dietitians but also by nurses and doctors who have been trained for such counselling.
