Abstract
ABSTRACT The intercropping of kenaf with sorghum was evaluated in southwestern Nigeria using different intercrop ratios and combinations. The Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) values indicated advantages in all intercrops of kenaf and sorghum. The highest LER of 1.6 resulted from a kenaf:sorghum ratio of 3:1 and was therefore recommended for intercropping with sorghum. Intercropping reduced kenaf core and fibre yields by 36.7% and 18.2%, respectively, and also reduced sorghum yields by 8.6% to 51.9%. The year x treatment interaction was not significant for kenaf core and sorghum yields but was significant for kenaf fibre yield. However, treatment effects were significantly different.
