Abstract

1. 1. Fatty acid synthetase has been isolated from the particle-free supernatant fraction of homogenates from lactating guinea-pig mammary gland. 2. 2. The fatty acid synthetase complex was homogenous when analysed by gel filtration and by ultracentrifugation. The molecular weight was 4.0 × 10 5. 3. 3. The complex synthesized a range (C 4 : o−C 18 : 0) of fatty acids, though palmitate (C 16: 0) was the predominant product. The proportions of fatty acids synthesized varied with the substrate concentrations used.
