Abstract

1. 1. The component fatty acids of the triglycerides of hippopotamus omental adipose tissue were shown to resemble those of ruminant animals in composition and intramolecular distribution. The presence of trans-unsaturated acid and a relatively high content of stearic acid suggest that, as in ruminants, microbial modification of fatty acids of feed lipids probably occurs in the partly divided stomach of the hippopotamus. 2. 2. Elephant adipose tissue triglycerides were found to contain an exceptionally high content of palmitic acid which was selectively esterified in the 2-position, as in the Suoidea (pigs and peccaries) suggesting that this unusual biochemical characteristic may be of phylogenetic significance.
