Abstract

This chapter aims to assess the perceived levels of stress, in order to demonstrate that Galton's easy country life and family repose has not been inherited by today's rural clergy. Stage one, which involved interviews with two female and eight male rural clergy, identified eleven main sources of stress, which formed the basis of an 84 item questionnaire. During stage two, this questionnaire was sent to rural clergy who had been given responsibility for three or more parishes. The question addressed in the chapter is, Can the traditional connection between the Anglican Church and rural life survive, at a time when rural clergy are experiencing high levels of stress as a result of the recent amalgamation of many rural parishes into multi-parish benefices?. Keywords:Anglican Church; stress
