Abstract

The material for this chapter came from many sources and most of it has not been officially published. The ideas contained in this chapter come from my experiences in the House of Delegates of the American Academy of Family Physicians, as a member of the Commission on Education of the American Academy of Family Physicians, as a member of the Residency Assistance Program, and from workshops I have attended sponsored by the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. The Residency Assistance Program publishes criteria they have established for residency training programs in family practice, and every family practice teacher should avail himself of this material. Few of the ideas in this chapter are original. They are merely an attempt by the author to bring together the thoughts and feelings of today’s leaders in family practice.
