Abstract

The nation presently has about 73 million families. Compared with the prewar level, the size of the average family has declined from 4.1 to 3.5 persons. The two-child family is becoming more and more popular. In Estonia, the average size of workers' and employees' families is 13 percent lower, and the average size of Estonian collective-farm families 21 percent lower, than the national average. Average family size in Tadzhikistan is 60 and 80 percent higher, respectively. While the family load indicator (number of dependents per working person) is 0.45 in Estonian workers' and employees' families and 0.59 in Estonian collective-farm families, the corresponding figures in Tadzhikistan are 1.31 and 1.56, respectively.
