Abstract

SUMMARY Two experiments were carried out using polyvinyl alcohol sponge (Ivalon) to fill complete defects in the shafts of canine femora. These experiments show that this plastic is: Tolerated by skeletal tissues without any evidence of foreign body reaction. Infiltrated at 3 months by vascular fibrous tissue showing no evidence of calcification or osteoid tissue. Not the complete answer as a substitute for bone.
