Abstract

A self‐similar, narrow‐strip Dugdale model is invoked to determine interactive crack tip plastic zones. Symmetric collinear multiple‐site damage (MSD) cracks are considered for the coalescence of plastic zones between adjacent cracks. The Swift’s ligament failure criterion is employed to predict the residual strength with or without considering the interaction between Dugdale‐type plastic zones. Better agreement is achieved between the calculated results and experimental data if the interaction between the plastic zones is implemented in a computing scheme.
