Abstract It can also be seen this way: with a soaring flight, apparently weightless they took off, in a neck-rising act that — as one could expect — ended in a mighty plunge. Wherever Romanticism had appeared, so enthusiastic, exuberant, eloquent and firmly linked with the contradictions of its time, it put on a different face: through the lobbies of power it landed on the back steps of history. This much can be gathered from the biography of Romantic poets and thinkers. After setting out for new horizons they very soon reached the lowlands of monotony. The “holy revolution” found its quick end in the profane haze of Prussian and Austrian reaction.
