Abstract

This chapter is of an introductory nature. The concept of factorization for non-singular continuous matrix functions is introduced. The existence of such a factorization is obtained for rational matrix functions and the role of this factorization in the theory of singular integral equations is described. In the final section formulae for the partial indices in the factorization of rational matrix functions are derived.
