Abstract

The removal of actinides, including the major actinides U, Pu and especially the minor actinides Am, Cm and Np from highly radioactive waste (HAW) would reduce the radiological hazard of the HAW. Over the past decade, several organic extractants have been studied for this purpose. In the USA, the application of bifunctional carbamoyl methyl phosphonates and phosphine oxides have received much attention and research efforts have concentrated recently on the development of the TRUEX process [1, 2, 3] in which octyl(phenyl)-N, N′-diisobutyl carbamoyl methyl phosphine oxide (CMPO) in tributyl phosphate (TBP) and paraffinic diluent is used as extractant. Diisodecyl phosphoric acid (DIDPA) which can extract trivalent actinides at pH = 0.5 has been suggested and tested by Japanese scientists [4, 5].
