Abstract

Large collections of strophomenacean brachiopods from many Ordovician and Silurian localities have been searched for specimens with uneroded beaks. A few have been found, and these have been prepared in sagittal section. The apical cavity is found to have no primal exterior opening. Therefore it cannot be interpreted as a vestigial pedicle foramen. It seems, rather, to be a vacuity formed for no special function but merely incidentally during the early stages of shell making.
