Abstract

Cathodes operating in the range of electric field strength and temperatures falling within the extended Schottky domain are discussed for applications requiring high current densities from a broad area cathode. Generally, these cathodes are operated in a pulsed high-voltage mode. Current densities of up to 300 A/cm/sup 2/ have been achieved without breakdown. Cathode performance is limited by space-charge effects and excessive evaporation at the high operating temperatures required.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
