Abstract

The problem of mechanical equilibrium of a layer on a crystalline substrate under the action of tensile force is considered. A model Hamiltonian is proposed and equations of motion and equilibrium are derived. Solutions of these equations are obtained, corresponding to Frenkel-Kontorova dislocation and crack. It is shown that crack length is proportional to inverse tensile force: 1 ∝ P -1.
