Abstract

The metastable (radiative) decay of Ar + 2 has been studied following the electron impact ionization of neutral Ar 2 and larger argon clusters. It is proposed that under certain experimental conditions, a major fraction of observed decay signal originates from Ar + 2 ions in the excited II( 1 2 ) u electronic state that have been expelled from larger clusters.
