Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰ and Ⅱ (IGF-Ⅰ and Ⅱ) during healing after the urethral sphincter muscle injury in female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Methods The model of urethral sphincter muscle injury in female rats (n=25) was made by intravagi-hal balloon inflation. The rats were killed at 2,4,6,8,14 days after trauma respectively, and the urethral specimens were harvested and processed for RT-PCR.A control group (n=5) underwent the same proce-dure without intravaginal balloon inflation. Results The expression of IGF-Ⅰ mRNA was increased at day 4,8, and 14 after urethral sphincter muscle injury, especially at day 8 (P<0.05) ;The expression of IGF-Ⅱ mRNA was increased at day 4,6,8 after urethral sphincter muscle injury, especially at day 6 and 8 (P<0.05) ; No expression of IGF- Ⅰ and Ⅱ mRNA was detected in the control group. Conclusion IGF- Ⅰ and Ⅱ mRNA was expressed during healing after the urethral sphincter muscle injury and related to the healing process.IGF- Ⅰ and Ⅱ probably play a role in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence induced by urethral sphincter muscle dysfunction. Key words: Urethral sphincter muscle; Injury; Insulin like growth factor
