Abstract

During spontaneous breathing inspiratory muscle activity does not stop immediately at the start of expiration, but decays at a rate which can be influenced importantly by pulmonary receptors. 1 When the contribution of this decaying activity to the expiratory flow pattern is suppressed by a short end-inspiratory occlusion, the time constant of the respiratory system (τRS = RRS/ERS) can be estimated from the expiratory flow pattern using equation 1 and P(t) = 0.4 KeywordsContinuous Positive Airway PressurePeak Expiratory FlowNeuromuscular ControlDecay ActivityResidual Standard DeviationThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
