Abstract

Objective To summarize the clinical experience of vitrectomy and combined surgery for the treatment of severe ocular trauma. Methods Forty-two eyes of 42 cases with severe ocular trauma underwent pars plana three-channel vitrectomy and combined with extraction of intraocular foreign bodies, cataract extraction, and/or retinal detachment surgery. Results The postoperative visual acuities of 39 eyes (92.86%) were improved, which were at ≤0.04 in 5 eyes(11.90%), 0.05~0.25 in 15 eyes(35.71%), 0.3~0.5 in 20 eyes(47.63%), ≥0.6 in 2 eyes(4.76%). The visual acuities at ≥0.05 were found in 37 eyes(88.10%) postoperatively and 4 eyes (9.52%) preoperatively.By chi-square test: The difference were statistically significant(χ2=51.887, P=0.000). The main postoperative complications are high intraocular pressure in 5 eyes (11.90%), after cataract in 4 eyes (9.52%), retinal detachment in 1 eye (2.38%), silicone oil emulsification in 3 eyes (7.14%). These complications were cured by the corresponding treatment. No serious complications, such as endophthalmitis, happened. Conclusion Vitrectomy combined with other different surgery for severe ocular trauma may obtain good postoperative vision with few complications. Key words: Ocular trauma, severe; Vitrectomy, combined surgery
