Abstract
ABSTRACTLanguage constructs subjective reality out of experience with the phenomenological world. The translator experiences the phenomenological thing of the text in its first iteration and then through a process elucidated by George Steiner as hermeneutic motion reiterates it into a new cultural realm. This article reviews the experience of a translator rewriting Chinese literary prose into English from a perspective of phenomenological hermeneutics using Steiner’s four stages of hermeneutic motion as the discursive backdrop.
