Abstract

General of the Infantry Genrikh Antonovich Leer (1829–1904) is considered one of the founding fathers of Russian strategic thinking. At the peak of his career, he was the director of the Nicholas General Staff Academy, a member of the Imperial St Petersburg Academy of Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and the St Petersburg Imperial University. During his career, he authored many works on military history, strategy and tactics, some of which were translated into German. This chapter is a translation of the ‘Introduction’ from Leer’s seminal work Opyt kritiko-istoricheskogo issledovaniya zakonov vedeniya voyny (polozhitel’naya strategiya) [The Experience of Historical-Critical Research into the Laws of Military Art (Positive Strategy)]. In this work, Leer not only set the course for the Russian ship of independent strategic thinking, but also equipped it with the required methodological sails.
