The experience of confessional mapping on the example of monastery construction

Abstract

The relevance and importance of the research topic, in particular for Russia, is associated with the great importance of religion and faith in the history of the formation of the state, in the formation and development of spirituality and culture. The activities of the Russian Orthodox Church should be revealed as an integral spatial-historical process, the comprehensive presentation of which will make confessional mapping an active area of thematic cartography. The article provides a brief history of confessional mapping in Russia and an analysis of its state today. Modern methods and computer technologies used in the development and creation of confessional maps and their reduction into a satin work are described. The experience of creating confessional maps is considered on the example of the development of monastic construction in each century, starting from the 10th century and up to our days. A brief review of some of the sources on which the database “Monasteries of the Russian Orthodox Church” was created is given. The technology of creating maps in the professional software product Microstation Bentley is described. The creation of general geographical bases for a series of maps is described, the solution of some difficulties in displaying hydrography for different centuries is described, the solution of the problem with the names of settlements for different time slices is shown. The coordination of cartographic information is described. The difficulties of localization of monasteries are described.
