Abstract

This article explores the concept of advocacy and its relationship to the empowerment of service users. Forms of advocacy are described and their potential applications in practice are discussed. The practice implications for nurses and carers of vulnerable client groups are considered. A subsequent article will examine the process and outcomes of self-advocacy from the perspective of a group member with a learning disability.
