The Experience and Psychological Impact of ‘Troubles’ related Trauma in Northern Ireland

Abstract

Given the backdrop of over three decades of civil conflict, Northern Ireland presents a unique case for the examination of the epidemiology of trauma. An extensive body of literature has emerged in relation to the number of incidents experienced during the political violence in Northern Ireland. There have also been numerous studies examining the psychological impact of Troubles-related trauma among the general population and within specific communities and sub-groups. The aim of this paper is to review the existing literature on the exposure to Troubles-related trauma and the resulting psychological impact, with a focus on Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, psychological well-being and coping.
