Abstract

Although Florida officials had successfully thwarted efforts to extend the suffrage to Negroes in the party primary prior to 1946, they complied with their Supreme Court's decision of July 24, 1945, which overturned a resolution passed by the State Democratic Executive Committee seeking to maintain the white primary.1 As a result the Florida, Negro has been. able gradually to expand his suffrage potential. Although in some isolated areas Negroes still do not participate, the overall picture is one of a steady but moderate increase in the number of Negroes registered and voting in all Florida elections.
