Abstract

The degree of freedom of a vapor-liquid equilibria of quaternary system (C1-C2-C3-C4) is four. If the temperature and the pressure are given as the variables of freedom, it is better to choose the compositions of a liquid phase, x2 and x3 as other variables. The temperature and the pressure are easily examined whether they are proper or not from the vapor pressure curves of the components. As for the liquid compositions it is difficult to choose the proper values. The vapor-liquid equilibria of a quaternary system can not exist if x2 and x3 are improperly chosen. The proper values for x2 and x3 can be found by the following method. The vapor-liquid equilibria of all binary systems which exist at given temperature and pressure are calculated and then the value of x2 in the system of C1-C2 or C2-C4 is plotted on X-axis, while the value of x3 in the system of C1-C3 or C3-C4 is plotted on Y-axis. If the system of C2-C3 exists, the composition of this system is plotted on XY-plane.The origin represents the composition of C1-C4 system. The lines which connect each of the binary systems are the compositions of the ternary systems. The area which is surrounded by the lines of ternary systems is the region in which the quaternary system exists.
