Abstract

The results of a search for magnetic quadrupole strength to the giant resonances of 12C, 16O and 28Si using 140 MeV electrons are compared with the theoretical predictions of the shell model. The effects of altering the two-body residual interaction and the single-particle wave functions and the effects of including ground state correlations are calculated. We have also calculated the transition matrix elements for the strong magnetic dipole level in 28Si at 11.4 MeV, and these are compared with experiment. Measurements on strong electric dipole, magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole levels in 16O and 28Si are presented and compared with the theoretical calculation of others.
