Abstract

On the basis of an atmospheric condition of a six‐layer general circulation model of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the spatial and the spectral partition of the long‐wave radiation energy exchange in the model atmosphere is investigated and its implications are discussed. It is found that most of the energy is exchanged between adjacent layers and through the wings of strong lines. The strong line approximation is found to be a good approximation for water vapor transmittance. Cooling to space, however, is found to be a poor approximation for the total cooling rate. Both the strong line and cooling to space approximation are discussed in the content of the energy exchange findings.
