Abstract
The exact S-matrix of the affine E 8 Toda field theory is found by bootstrap and checked against tree level standard perturbation theory. At a certain purely imaginary value g 0 of the coupling constant g, this S-matrix coincides with that associated by A.B. Zamolodchikov to the critical Ising model in a magnetic field. This supports the idea that the affine E 8 TFT at g= g 0 describes the scaling limit of the Ising model in a field.
