Abstract
What are we to make of the atherosclerotic carotid artery? Initial experience with carotid resection and endarterectomy was reported as early as 1951.1 By the mid-1990s, the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial (NASCET)2 and the Asymptomatic Carotid Atherosclerosis Study (ACAS)3 had shown that carotid endarterectomy is superior to best medical management in patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid stenoses.
