Abstract

AbstractI consider the problem of evolutionary branching in adaptive dynamics without applying the limits of separation of timescales between ecological and evolutionary processes. I derive expressions for the waiting time for a branching event to occur and survive in terms of both ecological and evolutionary parameters, and show how demographic stochasticity alone can result in the frequent failure of adaptive branching.
