Abstract
The evolution of the scintillation and topological charge of coherent vortex beams in turbulence is analyzed. Although such beams typically have inferior scintillation properties when compared with a comparable Gaussian beam, the topological charge of the vortex beam shows significant stability. The possibility of using such beams in optical communications is discussed.
