Abstract
Web tracking is ubiquitous and its current state is well known and researched. However, previous work in this field does not provide an overview of the tracking evolution over time. In our work, we use archived websites between the years 2000 and 2015 to measure the influence of tracking providers on the world wide web. With network graphs for each year, we show a significant growth of web tracking in a relatively short time. In the year 2005, about 10% of the websites were covered by the most popular three web trackers. This has grown up to 73% in the year 2015. In a 10 year period, one company managed to spread its tracker coverage to track more than 80% of our internet usage. This poses a still underestimated risk for both our security and privacy.
