a e a i s b o m b ( n e c m s t In little more than a decade, evidence-based edicine has evolved from a theoretical—and often ontroversial—concept into a widely practiced ethodology that can enhance the critical processes f medical decision making. Fears that evidenceased medicine would elevate the science at the xpense of the art of medicine and handcuff physiians to rigid “one size fits all” practice guidelines ave diminished. A thorough, systematic evidenceased review is a powerful tool to assist physicians nd patients who otherwise must make choices on he basis of conventional wisdom, hearsay, and iecemeal empirical data. We have learned much since 1999, when the merican Society for Blood and Marrow Translantation (ASBMT) launched its initiative to conuct evidence-based reviews of blood and marrow ransplantation in the treatment of selected disases. Often, the process has been as valuable for hat it cannot tell us as for what it can. A systematic eview may reveal a preponderance of conflicting tudies or conclude that there simply is not enough mpirical evidence to support one recommendation ver another.
