Abstract

Like many academic libraries, the Sims Memorial Library at Southeastern Louisiana University is facing new safety and security challenges. Library usage at Sims has increased over the past 4 years. There have been behavior problems with some students and non-affiliated users, including several outstanding incidents that have required police intervention. Prior to the temporary assignment of a police officer at the library, the staff embraced a new mindset concerning safety in and around the building. From this mindset evolved a new security ethos and a resolution to the library's current behavior problems.
