Abstract

In Europe and in North America melanic forms of many species of moths are increasing in relative frequency, and spreading through large parts of the range of some species. The evolution of melanism in six species of North American Geometridae is described and compared with similar events in related or similar European species. Possible future trends in the evolution of melanism in moths are considered, and an appeal is made for collectors to provide further information.
