Abstract

This series of 11 papers was read at the First British Congress on the History of Medicine and Pharmacy in September, 1960. For the medical historian these are a valuable source of information. As in any such series of papers, there is a wide range of quality, extending from the excellent papers on The History of Rural Medical and The Influence of Government Legislation on Medical Practice in Britain to the mediocre. There is a certain unevenness in treatment of the respective subjects; yet, as a summary of the various factors involved and organizations concerned, the papers are commendable. Some of them have helpful bibliographies for the student interested in further investigation of the subject. It is to be hoped that this is the first volume in a series of yearly monographs dealing with medicine in Britain.
