Abstract
The energy loss of 7 MeV/u 16O ions passing through solid carbon targets was measured. The targets were sufficiently thin to determine ΔE/ΔX of O 8+ and O 7+ ions separately. The evolution of ΔE/ΔX and charge state fractions with foil thickness provided data from which estimates of the energy loss contribution of electron capture and loss were obtained. This contribution is significant and greater than simple estimates.
