Abstract

On 28 June 2018 at a ceremony in Dublin Castle attended by President Michael D. Higgins, the state marked the 60th anniversary of Defence Forces participation on United Nations led or mandated peacekeeping operations. Since its first five peacekeepers deployed to Lebanon in 1958 the Defence Forces have had an unbroken record of participation on such operations. This paper traces the evolution of these operations from the traditional peacekeeping of the Cold War, to the development of regional peacekeeping and peace enforcement operations during the 1990s, to today's multidimensional peace support and crisis management operations throughout Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans.
