Abstract
A regional approach to managing the effects of salinity on the water resources of south-western Australia has evolved rapidly in recent years. As a rational basis for the evolving policies and strategies, a classification of river basins has been adopted relating land use and water resource potential to zones of increasing salinity hazard. Salinity management measures pertaining to both water quality and agricultural productivity are classified, described and evaluated in strategic terms as perceived by water resources managers. Although a comprehensive regional approach integrating water and agricultural objectives is yet to develop, a few tentative comments are offered in this direction.
